Almhotel Col Raiser
Traditional South Tyrolean alpine lodge. Family-run and deliberately intimate — not a luxury ski-resort chain. More like staying in a very well-kept mountain family home with serious cooking, local knotty pine interiors, and a compact but functional wellness area.
The last Col Raiser gondola from the valley runs around 16:15 — plan your ski day accordingly or you will be stranded in the village.
Why It Matters
One of very few ski-in/ski-out hotels in the Dolomites reached exclusively by cable car, positioned inside the Puez-Odle Nature Park with direct Dolomiti Superski access to 500km of piste. The kitchen is the real differentiator — chef Rita Schenk's regional cooking has been drawing repeat guests for decades. The private mountain museum is a genuine surprise.
The Almhotel Col Raiser sits at 2,106 meters on the Col Raiser mountain above Val Gardena, reachable only by cable car from Santa Cristina below. It's a real ski-in/ski-out property — the pistes run right past the door. The Schenk family runs it with serious intent: locally sourced pine paneling in every room, a private mountain museum with historical alpine artifacts and art, and chef Rita Schenk in the kitchen for 35 years. Just 11 rooms and suites, which keeps it intimate. Dinner is a 4-course themed affair, included in the half-board rate, and guests consistently rate it as the best meal of their entire Dolomites trip.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel sits inside the Puez-Odle Nature Park (UNESCO World Heritage). Trails leave directly from the hotel's front door. Col Raiser is one of the best trailheads in the Dolomites — you are already at 2,106m so you skip the grind of getting from valley to ridge. The Seceda ridge hike and connections toward the Alta Via 2 long-distance trail are all accessible without descending.
The hotel hosts a dedicated New Year's program. Specific details require inquiry, but the setting — high on the mountain, above the clouds — makes it a sought-after booking.
The Schenk family maintains a private museum of alpine history on the property — historical mountaineering equipment, skiing memorabilia, and a personal art collection. Visits sometimes include Prosecco with the family. Not formally scheduled but guests can request access.
The hotel sits at the top station of the Col Raiser gondola. Walk through the boot room, up an escalator, and you are on the piste. From here you have access to the Seceda ski area and connections to the full Dolomiti Superski circuit — 500km of groomed runs across 12 resorts, including the famous Sella Ronda loop. Host Hansi Schenk is a former ski instructor and gives personalized piste recommendations over breakfast.
