Shanghai
Resort calm dropped into the middle of a megacity. Wabi-sabi textures — rough stone, timber marquetry, rattan, paper louvers — against a neutral palette and a lot of greenery. The vibe is Shanghai classical garden, not business hotel. Quiet enough that guests notice the shift in mood the moment they pull into the driveway.
Ask for a Shikumen View room for views over the historic rooftops rather than a generic city-facing room — more character and roughly the same price tier.
Why It Matters
The first urban Alila in Greater China and a significant conversion of one of Shanghai's storied Four Seasons properties. Over half the rooms are suites. The flagship restaurant is led by a Michelin-pedigreed chef, and the hotel grows its own produce on a rooftop garden. Exclusive private access to Zhangyuan makes it the only hotel with a direct door to that heritage compound. World of Hyatt Category 5 property, redeemable at 17,000–23,000 points per night.
Alila Shanghai opened on September 25, 2024 in the bones of the former Four Seasons Shanghai Puxi — after an extensive renovation, it now stands as Greater China's first urban Alila Resort-style hotel. Designer Ju Bin of Horizontal Design anchored the whole thing around a 17-foot 'Gathering' tree sculpture in the glass-ceilinged fourth-floor lobby courtyard, studded with Jingdezhen ceramic leaves by local artist Oscar Wang. The 186 rooms (94 of which are suites) sit on floors 12–17 and 27–39, and the hotel has exclusive private access to the historic Zhangyuan Shikumen compound next door.
