Marea Beach Resort Encinitas
Barefoot luxury with serious sustainability credentials. Modernist coastal design, adult-focused (max two per room), surf-and-wellness culture baked in. Think clean lines and organic materials, not tropical maximalism.
Non-guests can book at VAGA Restaurant & Bar, The Pocket bar, and community yoga classes — all are open to the public
Why It Matters
One of the only purpose-built luxury resorts directly on the Southern California coast south of LA. Opened 2021, so the property is relatively new and modern. VAGA Restaurant is helmed by Top Chef alumni Chef Claudette Zepeda, drawing its own dinner crowd from well beyond Encinitas. The eco-design commitment goes beyond greenwashing — solar power, no single-use coffee pods, EV charging, Tesla resort car, and partnerships with local Lofty Coffee and Seven Seas Roasting Co.
Alila Marea opened in March 2021 as a purpose-built resort perched on a coastal bluff in Encinitas, midway between San Diego and Orange County. The architecture deliberately mirrors the surrounding landscape — natural stone, warm woods, and clean lines — so the building feels like an extension of the cliffs rather than an imposition on them. All 130 rooms cap at two guests, which keeps the atmosphere genuinely quiet. It is Encinitas in hotel form: surf culture, yoga on the bluff, sustainably sourced food, and an eco-design ethos that includes solar-powered pool heating and a Tesla as the resort car.
