Alexandra Palace
Grand château opulence with some contemporary touches on the upper floors. Think gilded fixtures, tassel chandeliers, stained-glass windows, a Marie-Antoinette lounge with a working fireplace, and white marble bathrooms with gold fittings. The second floor rooms shift to a cleaner, beam-exposed aesthetic.
Ask Laurent the maître d' for a private cellar tour — guests consistently single him out and the cognac/wine history is remarkable
Why It Matters
A French Historic Monument with a 20,000-bottle vaulted wine cellar, a 100,000-bottle cognac room, an El Septimo cigar lounge, and a Michelin-starred chef at the restaurant. All within an 18-hole golf course in rural Deux-Sèvres — not a combination you stumble upon often.
A 17th-century château in the Deux-Sèvres countryside, the Château du Petit Chêne passed through three aristocratic families and a French senator before La Maison Younan took it over in 2015 and rebuilt it — almost entirely, after a devastating fire in 2016/2017 — as a 5-star hotel. The result is 17 rooms and suites spread across 60-plus hectares of wooded parkland, with an 18-hole golf course literally wrapping around the building. It's a genuinely small place: fewer than 20 keys means the staff actually knows your name.

How you'll actually spend your days.
A dedicated smoking lounge stocked with El Septimo premium cigars. An unusual and appreciated touch for connoisseurs.
Seasonal outdoor heated pool set within the château gardens. Stylishly maintained — guests repeatedly call it out as a highlight, with a sun terrace alongside.
60–70 hectares of wooded parkland with ponds to explore on foot or by bike. The grounds include the golf course, formal gardens, and natural woodland.
Built in 1986, the 18-hole Golf du Petit Chêne is literally built into and around the château's parkland. Oak groves, pine hedges, water features, and clearings make for a varied track that suits both beginners and experienced players. Pro shop, private lessons from qualified instructors, and golf carts available. Managed by Bluegreen — bookings via bluegreen.fr/mazieres.
The hotel offers wine-tasting initiation sessions — formal oenological introductions bookable on request.
The hotel has a remarkable vaulted underground wine cellar with 20,000 bottles for guided tastings, and a separate cognac room with 100,000 bottles. Private tours are available and highly recommended — guests consistently describe them as a highlight, particularly with staff member Laurent who narrates the collection's history.
