Akan Tsuruga Bessou Hinanoza
Adults-only luxury ryokan with strong sense of place — Ainu cultural references, abundant natural wood, calming lake-view suites. Quiet and intentional, not flashy.

Why It Matters
One of the few all-suite ryokans in Hokkaido on a lakefront setting. Every suite has a private open-air onsen bath, and the all-inclusive drinks policy (covering the bar, foot bath, restaurant, and in-room minibar) is unusually generous for a property at this level. The ryokan is within reach of four national parks and is closely linked to Ainu culture and craftsmanship.
Hinanoza sits right on the edge of Lake Akan, one of Hokkaido's most remote and stunning corners. All 25 rooms are suites with private open-air hot spring baths — there are no standard rooms here. The name 'Hina' means home, and the ryokan leans into that idea: natural wood throughout the interiors (you can actually smell it), locally carved Ainu artwork in the common areas, and kaiseki meals served in private tatami rooms with no extra charge for drinks.

The Ainu Kotan village is 750 meters from the ryokan on foot. Includes Upa-upa traditional dance performances, craft shops, and the Икorochi national theater dedicated to Ainu ethnic dance. The hotel actively promotes Ainu cultural awareness through its decor and affiliated programming.
On-site museum featuring works by master Ainu wood carver Takeki Fujito and other local artists. A genuine collection, not decorative filler — the wood carving tradition of the Akan region is centuries old and the display is well-curated.
Ski resort approximately 2km from the property with slopes for beginners to advanced skiers. Ski equipment rental available near the property.
An immersive illuminated night walk through Bokke Forest near Lake Akan. The forest is lit with projection mapping and music to bring traditional Ainu stories to life. Affiliated with the Tsuruga Group and promoted from the hotel.
Evening cruise on Lake Akan, including a stop at a spiritual island in the center of the lake. Part of the annual Marimo Festival ceremony where guests write wishes and release them into the lake.
The hotel's affiliated adventure hub offers a wide range of nature activities including trekking, mountain biking, canoeing, cycling, hiking, Nordic walking, fishing, snowshoe tours, snowmobiling, and the 'Morning Coffee Tour' — drinking coffee on the frozen surface of Lake Akan in winter.
