Table Mountain

Cape Town's flat-topped sentinel commands breathtaking city views

That flat-topped giant looming over Cape Town? That's Table Mountain, and it's exactly as dramatic as it looks from the waterfront. At 1,085 meters, this sandstone sentinel has been watching over the Mother City for millions of years. And honestly, the views from up there will make your Instagram followers deeply jealous.

The mountain draws everyone from serious hikers tackling the Platteklip Gorge route to families riding the rotating cable car. Look, it's touristy for a reason – standing on that flat summit with Cape Town sprawled below and the Atlantic stretching to the horizon is genuinely spectacular. But here's what the postcards don't tell you: the weather changes fast, the cable car stops running in wind, and those hiking trails are steeper than they appear.

Platteklip Gorge is the most direct route up – and the most punishing. This stone staircase climbs 600 meters in just 2.5 kilometers. Your legs will burn, but it's the classic hiker's route. Expect 2-3 hours up if you're reasonably fit. India Venster offers more variety with some scrambling over rocks. It's longer but less relentless than Platteklip. The route follows the cable car route partway before branching off. Not for beginners – there are some exposed sections. Kasteelspoort is the gentlest option, winding up the back of the mountain. It's longer at 5 kilometers but the gradient is kinder. Perfect if you want to avoid the crowds on Platteklip. The cable car runs every 10-15 minutes when weather permits. It rotates 360 degrees during the 5-minute journey, so everyone gets the view. But here's the catch – it shuts down in winds over 60km/h, which happens more often than you'd think.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Cable car tickets are cheaper online – book ahead to save R50 per person and skip the queue
  • 2.Pack your own snacks and water – the summit café charges tourist prices for basic sandwiches
  • 3.Hiking is completely free, and the views are identical to the cable car experience
  • 4.Visit during shoulder season (March-April or October-November) for better accommodation rates
  • 5.Park along Tafelberg Road instead of the cable station lot to save R40 parking fees
  • 6.Sunset cable car rides cost the same as day tickets but include the golden hour show

Travel Tips

  • Check wind conditions before heading out – the cable car shuts down frequently in Cape Town's notorious wind
  • Start hiking early (7am) to avoid afternoon heat and crowds on popular routes like Platteklip Gorge
  • Download offline maps – cell service gets spotty on some hiking routes, especially India Venster
  • Bring layers even on hot days – temperature drops 10-15°C between city level and summit
  • Don't attempt hiking routes if clouds are rolling in – visibility drops to zero quickly
  • Keep your cable car ticket – you need it for the descent, and replacements cost full price
