Pudong

Shanghai's futuristic financial district across the Huangpu

Look, Pudong isn't old Shanghai. This is the Shanghai of sci-fi movies and Instagram dreams. Twenty-five years ago, this was farmland across the Huangpu River. Now it's home to some of the world's tallest buildings and most expensive real estate. The skyline hits different here – especially when you're standing on the Bund looking across the water. But here's the thing about Pudong: it's not just about the towers. You've got world-class museums, Michelin-starred restaurants, and shopping that'll make your credit card weep. Sure, it lacks the gritty charm of the French Concession, but if you want to see China's vision of the future, this is ground zero.

Lujiazui is where you want to be if you're here for the full Pudong experience. The Park Hyatt sits in the Shanghai World Financial Center – you're literally sleeping in the clouds. Rates start around ¥2,500 per night, but the views from floors 79-93 are worth every yuan. The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai Pudong offers similar luxury at the IFC Tower with slightly better access to the metro. For something more reasonable, Century Park area gives you green space and easier subway connections. The Grand Kempinski Shanghai is solid mid-luxury, about ¥800-1,200 per night. You're a 10-minute metro ride from the financial district but with actual breathing room. Avoid staying near Pudong Airport unless you have an early flight. The area feels isolated, and the commute into central Pudong takes 45 minutes on a good day.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Skip the expensive airport express bus (¥30) and take the Maglev + Metro combo (¥55 total) – it's faster and more fun
  • 2.IFC Mall and Super Brand Mall offer free WiFi and air conditioning – perfect for escaping summer heat without buying anything
  • 3.Many hotel bars have happy hour 5-7 PM with 50% off cocktails – Cloud 9 drinks drop from ¥120 to ¥60
  • 4.Century Park entrance is only ¥10 and gives you green space plus skyline views without paying for observation decks
  • 5.Food courts in malls offer set meals for ¥30-50 while hotel restaurants charge ¥200+ for similar quality Chinese food
  • 6.Take the free shuttle bus between IFC Mall and other Pudong shopping centers instead of taxis
  • 7.Oriental Pearl Tower tickets are ¥220 but Shanghai Tower observation deck (¥180) has better views and shorter lines

Travel Tips

  • Download VPN before arriving – Google Maps and Instagram are blocked, and hotel WiFi restrictions vary
  • Bring a portable charger – those skyline photo sessions drain batteries fast, especially in cold weather
  • Learn basic Mandarin numbers for taxi rides – many drivers don't speak English despite the international business district
  • Pack layers even in summer – indoor AC is aggressive, dropping from 35°C outside to 18°C in malls and offices
  • Keep cash handy – some smaller vendors near Century Park and wet markets don't accept mobile payments
  • Book restaurant reservations through your hotel concierge – they have better connections than online platforms
  • Download offline maps before taking the metro – cell service is spotty in tunnels under the Huangpu River

Frequently Asked Questions

Very safe. It's probably the safest part of Shanghai with heavy security around financial buildings and well-lit streets. The biggest risk is getting lost in the underground mall networks connecting the towers.
