Pacific Crest Trail

Epic wilderness trek from Mexico to Canada

The Pacific Crest Trail stretches 2,650 miles from the Mexican border to Canada, cutting through California, Oregon, and Washington. This isn't your weekend hiking trail. We're talking about a months-long commitment through some of America's most remote wilderness. The PCT passes through 25 national forests and 7 national parks, crossing the Mojave Desert, Sierra Nevada, and Cascade Range. Most thru-hikers take 4-6 months to complete the entire route. But here's the thing — you don't have to hike the whole trail. Section hiking lets you tackle specific segments, from the desert landscapes near Campo to the volcanic peaks of Washington's North Cascades.

The PCT divides into three distinct sections, each with its own personality. Southern California (miles 0-702) starts at the Mexican border near Campo and includes the challenging Mojave Desert crossing and the stunning Sierra Nevada. You'll hit major resupply towns like Idyllwild, Big Bear, and Mammoth Lakes. Central California and Oregon (miles 702-1,846) covers the High Sierra, including a 200-mile stretch through wilderness areas with no road access. The Cascade Range begins here, passing through Crater Lake National Park. Northern California, Oregon, and Washington (miles 1,846-2,650) features volcanic peaks, dense forests, and ends at the Canadian border monument near Manning Park. Each section offers different challenges — desert water sources in the south, snow navigation in the Sierra, and unpredictable weather in Washington's North Cascades.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Budget $3-5 per mile for a thru-hike, including food, gear replacement, and town stops
  • 2.Resupply boxes cost $15-25 to mail, but buying food in trail towns can cost 2-3x more
  • 3.Hostels and trail angel accommodations run $20-40/night vs $60-120 for motels
  • 4.Gear replacement is inevitable — budget $500-800 for shoes, clothing, and equipment during a thru-hike
  • 5.Town food splurges add up fast — a typical hiker dinner costs $25-40 in trail towns

Travel Tips

  • Download offline maps before entering wilderness areas — cell service is spotty to nonexistent
  • Start your hike with a 3-day shakedown on a PCT section to test gear and fitness
  • Join PCT Facebook groups and forums for current trail conditions and beta from recent hikers
  • Pack extra socks and underwear — foot health makes or breaks long-distance hikes
  • Learn to read weather patterns, especially in the Sierra Nevada where afternoon thunderstorms are common
  • Carry a whistle and know basic wilderness first aid — help can be days away
  • Respect trail angels but don't expect their help — they're volunteers, not a service

Frequently Asked Questions
