National Mall

America's front yard showcasing history and democracy

The National Mall isn't just a park. It's America's front yard, where history lives and breathes on 2 miles of green space stretching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial. Here's where school groups pose in front of the Washington Monument and families spread picnic blankets between the world's best museums. The Smithsonian Institution calls this place home, with 11 museums lining the Mall's edges like cultural bookends. But don't expect quiet contemplation - this is democracy in action, complete with tour groups, food trucks, and the occasional protest march. The cherry blossoms bloom here each spring, drawing millions who come for the Instagram shot and stay for the history lesson.

Itineraries coming soon

We're working on adding amazing itineraries for National Mall. In the meantime, try the app to create your own!

Skip the Mall itself - there are no hotels on the actual green space. Instead, plant yourself in Foggy Bottom, where the Watergate Hotel and State Plaza Hotel put you within walking distance of the Lincoln Memorial. The Metro's Blue and Orange lines connect you to Smithsonian Station in 10 minutes. Downtown DC works too, especially around Penn Quarter where the W Hotel and Conrad Washington sit near Gallery Place Metro. You'll pay $300-500 per night for decent digs, but the trade-off is rolling out of bed and reaching the Air and Space Museum before the crowds hit at 10am. Capitol Hill offers cheaper options like the Liaison Capitol Hill, though you'll start your Mall exploration from the eastern end near the Capitol building.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.All Smithsonian museums are completely free - that's 11 world-class museums with zero admission cost
  • 2.Pack lunch and snacks - museum food is overpriced and mediocre, food trucks outside are cheaper
  • 3.Use Metro day passes ($14.75) if you're making multiple trips - individual rides add up fast
  • 4.Many monuments are free and accessible 24/7, perfect for budget-conscious evening exploration
  • 5.Free Wi-Fi throughout most museums and public areas - no need for expensive roaming charges
  • 6.Street parking is free on Sundays and after 6:30pm weekdays, if you can find a spot

Travel Tips

  • Download the Smithsonian app before you go - it has maps and highlights for all museums
  • Start early (museums open at 10am) to beat tour groups and school field trips
  • Comfortable walking shoes are non-negotiable - you'll easily walk 5+ miles in a day
  • Security lines at popular museums can be 30+ minutes during peak season
  • The Castle (Smithsonian building) has the best overview and orientation information
  • Many museums have limited timed entry tickets for special exhibits - book ahead online
  • Bathroom strategy: use museum facilities, not the scattered public ones on the Mall
  • Weather changes fast in DC - pack layers and a small umbrella
