Golden Temple

Sikhism's Holiest Golden Shrine of Universal Welcome

The Golden Temple rises from its sacred pool like something from a dream. But this isn't just Instagram gold - it's the beating heart of Sikhism, where 100,000 pilgrims and travelers arrive daily to find peace, free meals, and radical hospitality. Located in Amritsar, Punjab, the Harmandir Sahib opens its doors to every faith, caste, and creed. The catch? There isn't one. Just remove your shoes, cover your head, and step into one of India's most moving spiritual experiences.

Guru Ram Das founded Amritsar in 1577, but the Golden Temple took shape under his successor, Guru Arjan Dev, in 1604. The structure you see today emerged after Ahmad Shah Abdali destroyed the original in 1757. Maharaja Ranjit Singh rebuilt it in 1809, adding the gold plating that gives the temple its name. Here's what makes it special: the temple sits lower than the surrounding plaza, symbolizing humility. Four entrances welcome people from all directions - north, south, east, west - representing the universal nature of Sikhism. The Guru Granth Sahib, Sikhism's holy book, rests inside during the day before being ceremonially carried to the Akal Takht each evening around 10 PM.
