This is Jordan's largest biosphere reserve, home to 800 plant species and everything from Nubian ibex to Syrian wolves. But here's what makes Dana special: you can hike from Mediterranean woodland at 1,500 meters elevation down to desert scrubland at sea level, all in a single day. The reserve protects four different bio-geographical zones, making it the country's most biodiverse destination. And unlike Wadi Rum's tourist crowds, Dana still feels genuinely wild.

The Rummana Mountain Trail offers the gentlest introduction to Dana - a 3-kilometer loop that takes about 2 hours and stays relatively flat through juniper forests. Start early from Rummana campsite to spot wildlife before the heat kicks in. For something more challenging, the Dana to Feynan trail covers 14 kilometers and drops 1,000 meters in elevation. This full-day hike takes you through all four ecosystems, but you'll need to arrange transport from Feynan Ecolodge at the bottom. The Wadi Dana trail splits the difference at 9 kilometers, following the valley floor with moderate elevation changes. Here's the thing about Dana's trails: they're not well-marked like European hiking paths. Bring a GPS device or hire a local guide from Dana village. The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature runs guided walks for 25 JOD per person, and honestly, it's worth it for the wildlife spotting alone.
