Fish River Canyon Trail

Africa's second largest canyon offers epic multi-day hiking adventure

The Fish River Canyon Trail isn't for weekend warriors. This 85-kilometer beast through Africa's second largest canyon will test every muscle you didn't know you had. But here's what makes it worth the pain: five days of hiking through landscapes so alien they could be Mars, camping under some of the clearest night skies on Earth, and the kind of silence that makes city folks twitch. The trail drops 550 meters into the canyon on day one and doesn't let up until you crawl out five days later. Most people attempt it once. The crazy ones come back.

The Fish River Canyon Trail starts at Hikers Viewpoint and ends 85 kilometers later at Ai-Ais Hot Springs. Day one hits you with the Chain Ladders descent – metal rungs bolted into cliff faces that'll have your legs shaking before lunch. You drop 550 meters in the first few hours. Day two follows the river through the Hell Bend section, where temperatures can hit 45°C in summer. Day three brings the notorious Table Mountain passage – don't let the name fool you, this isn't a gentle stroll. Days four and five ease up slightly as you approach the thermal springs at Ai-Ais. The entire route is unmarked except for occasional cairns, so navigation skills aren't optional.

Money-Saving Tips

  • 1.Book permits exactly one year in advance when they release – popular dates sell out in hours
  • 2.Shuttle services from Keetmanshoop cost around N$1,500 per group, split costs with other hikers
  • 3.Buy gear in South Africa before crossing into Namibia – outdoor equipment is cheaper and more available
  • 4.Pack all your food from major towns – the small shops near the canyon charge tourist prices
  • 5.Emergency evacuation insurance is mandatory and costs around $50, don't skip it

Travel Tips

  • Train with a weighted pack for months before attempting this trail – it's not negotiable
  • Download offline maps to your phone and carry a paper backup – GPS fails in the canyon
  • Start hiking before sunrise to avoid midday heat, especially in the Hell Bend section
  • Pack extra water purification tablets – the Fish River isn't as clean as it looks
  • Inform someone of your exact itinerary and expected finish date before starting
  • Test all your gear on multi-day hikes before attempting the canyon trail
  • Bring duct tape for emergency gear repairs – sharp rocks destroy equipment
  • Pack high-calorie foods that don't require much water to prepare

Frequently Asked Questions

Extremely challenging. This is considered one of Africa's toughest multi-day hikes, requiring excellent fitness, navigation skills, and desert hiking experience. The initial descent via Chain Ladders and unmarked route through rocky terrain make it unsuitable for casual hikers.
